Pre-competition massage is the physical and mental preparation of an athlete for specialised athletic activity (running, swimming, cycling, etc.). This massage is short and performed 30 min – 24 h before the competition. Pre-competition massage increases the athleteäs physical and mental readiness for the competition. This massage improves circulation, flexibility, and mental clarity in order to increase the entire body’s readiness for exertion. Pre-competition massage does not use deep techniques because these could reduce the tonicity and increase flexibility, which could in turn cause disorders in musculo-skeletal system functioning. Stimulating and toning techniques, joint mobilisation, short passive stretches and movements are used. The massage length is 30 minutes.
